We are offering organic, non-GMO grits. This is extra special since corn is one of the most commonly genetically modified foods out there. But now, you don’t need to miss out any longer!

What are They?

For all you Northern folks, grits are of Native American origin and are common in the Southern United States, particularly as a breakfast food. It is made by removing the husk and germ from hard dried corn, and then stone-mill cracking what is left.  

Are they Healthy?

Actually, yes they are! Science has proven through studies that grits are even better for you than the more common (and in my opinion, overrated) oatmeal. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, grits are high in B-6, a vitamin known to help prevent carpal tunnel, rheumatoid arthritis and vision problems. It also aids your body’s production of serotonin, which enhances your mood and prevents depression.  It contains folate, which may prevent cancer and anemia. In fact, in has more than five times the amount of folate as oatmeal. They are a rich source of the amino acid leusine, which enhances muscle endurance and gives your muscles more energy. And to this good ol’ southern girl, they’re just tastier all around!

How to Prepare Them

Use 4 parts of salted water to 1 part grits.

 Bring the water to a brisk boil and then gradually add your grits, stirring all the while so it doesn’t clump. Turn the heat down to a medium or even a low and cook until your desired thickness, stirring fairly often. Some folks like theirs thick and creamy, but I prefer mine a bit runny and piping hot!
